Ahhh COLD READING. It terrifies just about every actor, even some stars. Why you may ask? Well, because they haven’t auditioned in a very long time!
So, what is Cold Reading? Lets break it down.
COLD: without preparation or rehearsal. Unfamiliar. Going into the test cold.
READING: written or printed matter that can be interpreted.
The two together. Unprepared and unfamiliar written material, that must be interpreted.
Cold Reading is extremely important because, there will be times when you audition, and you’re not quite right for the character, but the producers like you! So, they will “hit” you with cold or unfamiliar material. This is where you must shine or go home. Another time when your Cold Reading skills are a must, are when there is a realization, that the scene being shot isn’t working. The writers will huddle amongst themselves to brain storm for an answer. When their rewrite is ready, you better be ready to interpret it. Remember, shine or go home!
